Math Activity Websites

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics sponsors a website named “Illuminations” that provides over 100 challenging activities for students at all levels

Utah State University sponsors the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives.  The site has activities and challenges that help students visualize “what’s behind” the computations we do in math.  There are challenges for all levels and a variety of topics: fractions, algebra, geometry, measurement.

Other Interesting Sites to Explore

Cool Science provides information about a number of enriching science topics for older students.

WebQuests are a series of activities that focus on a specific curriculum topic.  They involve students doing research and synthesizing the information they learn.   Thousands of topics are available on a variety of sites. Scavenger Hunts provide students with a series of questions to research.  Try “googling” WebQuests for accessible sites.

Reading Flashcard Websites

Flashcard Exchange also provides sight word/ phrases in flashcard form.  The cards make use of lists of over 1000 words and phrases developed by Dr. Fry (hence the name “Fry Phrases”) which can be practiced online.

Unique Teaching Resources also provides electronic versions of the Fry phrase lists that can be practiced using a POWERPOINT slide show. Try ‘googling”  Fry Phrases to find a multitude of other resources for practice.

The Michigan Department of Education has posted a pilot program titled Family FUNdamentals that contains pages of “non-worksheet” activities for primary math and reading literacy.  Activities for students from pre-school to Grade 2 are things that will have students “practicing” without realizing they’re “practicing.”

Reading Rockets and Reading is Fundamental websites also provide literacy activities and articles for parents.

Storyline Online introduces students to interesting new books read by famous Hollywood actors.
